Les Schwab – Hood River

 
McCormack Construction partnered with Les Schwab Tire Centers on a comprehensive renovation and expansion of their Hood River location, one of two facilities to feature the company’s new storefront design. The $2.4 million project was completed in 2023 under the direction of Matt Hanigan, Les Schwab Construction Manager, and represents an important modernization of the Oregon-based company’s aging facilities. The project demonstrates Les Schwab’s commitment to updating its locations while maintaining continuous service to customers.
 
The project involved a 15,750-square-foot renovation of the existing facility and construction of a new storefront addition at 3140 Cascade Avenue. McCormack served as CM/GC, delivering a fully renovated tire center complete with full parking lot replacement and expansion, along with landscaping and exterior improvements. The 12-month project transformed the aging facility into a modern retail and service location while incorporating Les Schwab’s updated design standards.
 
Key challenges included managing construction at an active, high-traffic store that remained operational throughout the project. The location’s popularity and Hood River’s extreme weather fluctuations added complexity to scheduling and logistics. Severe weather conditions periodically prevented the dispatch of concrete and asphalt from Portland due to freeway shutdowns, requiring flexible planning and material coordination to avoid project delays while maintaining customer access and safety.
 
To address these challenges, McCormack maintained regular communication with store operations and the owner to ensure patrons could continue receiving services without interruption. The team built several partitions to keep customers safe and separated from construction activities, allowing the store to function normally while renovation work progressed. McCormack adapted scheduling and material delivery strategies to work around weather-related disruptions, coordinating closely with suppliers to minimize impacts on the project timeline.
 
The Les Schwab Hood River project was completed on time and under budget, building a strong relationship with both the owner and store operations staff. For McCormack Construction, this project demonstrates expertise in occupied commercial renovation, logistics management in challenging conditions, and the ability to maintain business continuity while delivering comprehensive facility modernization.
